Why Depression Is Called a “10-Trillion-Won Illness of the Mind”
Depression is often referred to as a “10-trillion-won illness of the mind,” and there are several reasons behind this expression.
1️⃣ The Enormous Social Cost
Depression does not only affect individuals—it places a heavy burden on society as a whole.
- Direct medical costs such as therapy and medication
- Productivity loss due to absenteeism and reduced focus at work
- Early retirement, unemployment, and increased welfare spending
When all of these are combined, the total cost reaches trillions to tens of trillions of won annually at a national level.
2️⃣ The Cost Increases Because It’s Invisible
If a bone breaks, it can be treated and healed.
Depression, however, often worsens when left untreated and has a high relapse rate.
- Early treatment is shorter and less expensive
- Neglect leads to chronic conditions and years of treatment
This gap slowly consumes not just money, but time—and lives.
3️⃣ The Personal Life Loss Is Large Enough to Be Measured in Money
Depression often leads to:
- Career interruption
- Relationship breakdowns
- Loss of self-efficacy
In economics, this is measured using QALY (Quality-Adjusted Life Years).
When converted into monetary value, the loss truly reaches a trillion-level scale.
Interestingly, recent studies show that many adults with ADHD also experience depression and low self-esteem.
Repeated cycles of distraction, procrastination, and self-blame often contribute to this emotional burden.
Although depression and ADHD appear to be entirely different diagnoses, they share one key trait:
Thoughts spiral and amplify inside the mind.
Why “Three Lines” Matter
For both depression and ADHD, long journaling or ambitious goal-setting can feel overwhelming.
What’s needed instead is a short, finishable form of writing.
Just three lines a day.
Short enough not to overload the brain,
yet long enough to release emotions.

This is why I created a three-line positive journaling app—
one that can be used comfortably by people experiencing depression or ADHD.
That app is Positive Bunny Diary.
1. The Effect of Gratitude Journaling
Gratitude journaling is a habit whose benefits have been widely supported by research and real-world cases.
Across social media, broadcasts, and psychological literature, gratitude journaling is frequently cited as having a positive effect on emotional stability and depression relief.
Writing down moments of gratitude does not solve problems instantly,
but it creates a small inner strength that helps calm anxiety and low mood.
2. Depression, ADHD, and the Power of Writing
Although depression and ADHD are different conditions, they share one thing in common:
thoughts do not stop—they multiply.
Depression traps the mind in repetitive negative thinking,
while ADHD scatters thoughts, leading to exhaustion and self-criticism.
What matters here is not willpower, but a tool that allows thoughts to pause and settle.
That is why short, low-pressure writing is often more helpful than long journaling or ambitious plans.
3. Writing Without Forced Positivity
Gratitude journaling is not about forcing positive thoughts.
You do not need to write about achievements or extraordinary days.
- “The sunlight felt warm today.”
- “The coffee tasted better than expected.”
These simple notes are enough.
What matters is not changing emotions, but acknowledging and organizing the day as it is.
4. Introducing the Bunny Widget

When you download Positive Bunny Diary, you will be guided to install a home screen widget.
By pressing and holding your home screen and
selecting [Widgets],
you can find Positive Bunny Diary and
choose either a 1×1 or 1×2 widget.
The bunny widget allows you to record three lines of gratitude directly from your home screen,
removing the burden of opening the app every time.
As you write more entries throughout the day,
you’ll notice the bunny’s mood gradually improving.
5. Auto-Save Feature
While writing, interruptions often happen.
You may switch apps to send a message, add a calendar event,
or suddenly turn off your screen when someone speaks to you.
Positive Bunny Diary automatically saves your writing,
so there’s no need to worry.
Even if you stop midway, your previous text remains intact when you return.
This removes the pressure of having to “finish” an entry.

6. Safe Even When Changing Phones
Even if you change your phone, your journal entries remain safe.
Positive Bunny Diary supports export and import features,
allowing you to move your data easily.
Some apps rely on Google account syncing,
but this can lead to privacy issues if accounts are shared.
With manual export and import,
your diary stays private while remaining transferable.
7. Multilingual Support
Positive Bunny Diary supports both Korean and English.
It can be recommended to friends overseas,
and language can be changed easily in settings.
Sharing gratitude journaling—a helpful practice for depression and ADHD—across cultures
also brings a quiet sense of self-affirmation:
“I helped someone today.”

8. Theme Customization
The app offers four visual themes:
- Sky Blue
- Warm Pink
- Natural Green
- Soft Orange
Changing the theme based on your mood adds visual comfort and stability.
These small choices help users maintain the habit longer.
9. Personal Experience – The Change Writing Brought
The biggest change I noticed while using Positive Bunny Diary
was that journaling stopped feeling like a chore.
Instead, it became a tool for emotional stability.
Writing three lines of gratitude each day gradually organized my thoughts.
It did not cure depression or attention issues overnight,
but it provided a small foundation to get through each day.
After about a week, I noticed a growing sense of calm.
10. Closing Thoughts
If recurring fatigue or emotional heaviness weighs on your week,
starting a gratitude journal with Positive Bunny Diary may be one option.
Within just three lines a day,
there is often more comfort and relief than expected.
Without pressure, starting today,
I hope you’ll begin recording moments of gratitude with your bunny companion.
